NIP-39: External Identities in Profiles

Nostr protocol users may have other online identities such as usernames, profile pages, keypairs etc. they control and they may want to include this data in their profile metadata so clients can parse, validate and display this information.

This is the only true verification that we have.

IMO, more Nostr clients should support displaying NIP-39 on profile pages. At this time I believe it's only Amethyst that supports this NIP. This NIP is almost 2 months old and hasn't gained a lot of support. Why? Which other services should be added to this NIP? Keybase seems like an easy addition. Others?

Interesting. How would I add nip-39 data to my profile? What other data is supported?

Must do more research πŸ€”

As you can see from my profile, I have GitHub and Twitter linked. This essentially proves that I am the person that has that Twitter account and that GitHub account.

I also have a lot of badges πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Niiiice.

I see Twitter, Github and Mastadon in settings. I guess I could link them. But I also Telegram is supported by the nip, but not an option in Amethyst πŸ€”

You're right. Hmm. nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z why isn't Telegram supported?

Explain like I'm 5 years old. What does this verify, how would one use it, and what is the overarching benefit for Nostr.

Not a trolling question, seriously interested in the value proposition you see here for average users.

it would verify that the person you're talking to right now is the same person that is @derekmross on twitter or @derekross on github or .

Thank you. I don't use Amethyst as my primary client so I've not seen this. Assuming it uses a posted proof for verification?

Yes, you have to post a proof on the other platform and link to it.

Thank you for explaining it to me so well.

NIP-39, by easily integrating all other online identities (old, new, and future), will be at the core of Nostr's long-term success. Only a truly open protocol such as Nostr can be trusted with the challenge of being the source of truth for all digital identities.

Nostros has it as well.

Definitely Keybase and Signal and SimpleX

I'm kind of the opinion that identity verification doesn't make much sense in a highly pseudonymous network like Nostr. But I guess there's certain cases where linking an online identity would be beneficial.
