It'd be cool to have an "advanced user mode" setting that enabled a non-custodial second wallet.

Excellent self custody options already exist.

Their product is a custodial option, feel free not to use it. Those that need the convenience will use WoS instead.

Oh I'll push for self custody at any opportunity but it's pointless to ask WoS to... abandon their entire business to replicate what already exists.

Just use another wallet 👀 Noncustodial lightning wallet with the ux as simple as in WoS is impossible

So are banks - Custodial, convenient and traditional. FDIC insured too. Why not just use that if convince me is priority over security.
