It has gone down a lot with some updates this week but there are still some edge cases to iron out.

There's no non custodial lightning wallet that can completely avoid force closes though, as an fyi. Just ways to mitigate it as much as possible.

Should it be trying to open a channel or what does the user need to do when they realize their small babkance is back on-chain?

It does not automatically try to open up a channel with on chain funds. Users can use the swap icon button on the balance box to convert it back to LN.

thanks. would you consider an option to back the phrases via email / self hosting options, similar to how trust wallet, cake wallet & safepal does it?

understood. but so is losing mnemonic phrases. how these wallet does it is they have an encrypted file uploaded to the drive and when login via email the wallet identifies this file and unecrypted it using a user defined password
