Free speech should be allowing people to freely express their opinions and being able to engage in open and constructive debate. Those opinions aren’t always what we want to hear but we should be open minded and try to understand all points of view. What we shouldn’t tolerate though are threats, hateful comments and personal attacks however some seem too willing to accept these as part of “free speech”.
Discussion
Elon Musk when he came to Twitter as CEO. He also said exemplary things and what we see now is censorship on everything. This is always a bad way. it's always the same story. I also think such attacks are very bad things. But this should be solved exclusively in an individual order, I don't like it, I added it to the blacklist myself.
Yeah I don’t think that there is any nice way to deal with it on Nostr other than blocking at an individual level. I’m just hoping that these sort of attacks don’t become normalised here and as a community we can try to push back against it but unfortunately I think it will get worse as Nostr grows.
I think the best solution is to ignore this and quietly add it to the blacklist. Such people provoke reactions, and if there is always emptiness in response, then they will not get what they want. After a while they will stop doing it. And what happened now they got what they wanted unfortunately. It's not easy, but it's the only way as I see it. Decentralization makes it more obvious, shows that there are such people, but we get an open and transparent picture of what is happening and together we can cope. It is much worse when such people are at the head of centralization and this is really a disaster.
Hateful comments is the grey area. Remember you could call for the death of Russians only on social media. When we let someone else dictate what is acceptable the line will be moved constantly. Nice speech doesn't need protection
If you want free speech you have to be able to tolerate what other people say, no matter how hateful or personal their comments are.
You can’t advocate for free speech and in the same statement say ‘what we shouldn’t tolerate…’
But I support your right to contradict yourself. 😄
