I’m confused why self hosting is so important. How do you guys feel about using Podhome or another podcasting 2.0 centric host? From my POV, there’s an opportunity to build small groups of artists using the same host and they all promote each others songs and podcast together. An entirely new economy could form from banding together in small numbers and podcast together.

Just my two sats: it doesn't matter what company you host with as long as you have COMPLETE control of your RSS feed.
Ideally it's V4V where everyone involved gets a value split without any baked-in, non-negotiables like an automatic split to the hosting company. Then people are free to add one in for the value received for the company if they want, but others can choose not to since they may pay for the hosting services already on a monthly/yearly basis and feel that's the value equivalency.
