The Ganj Nameh Inscriptions are ancient rock carvings located approximately 12 kilometers southwest of Hamadan, Iran, near Mount Alvand.
They date back to the Achaemenid Empire, around the 5th century BC, and were commissioned by two prominent Persian kings: Darius I (reigned 522-486 BC) and his successor Xerxes I (reigned 486-465 BC). The inscriptions are written in Old Persian, Elamite, and Neo-Babylonian cuneiform scripts.
They convey messages about the kings’ divine authority and the favor of the Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda. The Inscriptions consist of two distinct panels carved into a granite cliff face. Each panel is roughly square-shaped, measuring about two meters high by one meter wide, and positioned a few meters apart from each other.
