Growing populations and the impact of climate change are putting increasing pressure on water resources in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The region has 15 major transboundary river basins, but the equitable distribution of water resources remains a challenge due to climatic factors and geographical distribution . Transboundary water cooperation is essential for nurturing stability and harmony in the region. The SADC Revised Protocol on Shared Watercourses of 2000 and other regional instruments drive and govern transboundary water cooperation. The Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) supports countries in promoting transboundary cooperation within shared river basins.
