Daily Roman Fact:

The early reign of the ineffectual Emperor Nero was frequently being meddled with by his mother Agrippina the Younger. This came to a head when it came to light she may be setting up a cousin to take over for Nero that would be more compliant with her suggestions. Due to this apparent betrayal Nero decided to have her killed. However, even on that Nero bungled. According to sources he tried to have her poisoned three times, rigged the ceiling above her bed to fall on her while sleeping, and even managed to involve her in a shipwreck only to find out later she swam to shore. Eventually, he gave up pretenses of "accidental" death and just hired an assassin to stab her. That one worked. According to legend her final words were "Smite my Womb"
