This festival dates back to the days before electricity, when candles were given to monks at the start of Buddhist lent, or Khao Pansa, a time in which monks remain in their monastery for three months without traveling. Since 1927, this festival has grown into a parade of huge candle floats, Northeastern bands, and dance groups in traditional costumes. A contest is held and an award is given to the most beautiful.
