Yes, there are laws that prevent the removal of native vegetation. Mainly protecting large trees and larger areas of native bush. For example, a farmer would have to submit an application to clear native vegetation just to expand farmland, but maybe not for a fire break. It can be fairly restrictive, but largely ignored unless done on a large scale. Hypothetically, I may have cleared native vegetation from my place and out on the verge for "fire reduction".
