That might be the combination of the tow truck, the mechanic taking a look at it, and the new battery itself. I know nothing about cars.

I would suggest taking somewhere else because they're ripping you off. The most I've seen in car batteries $300 is one of those batteries that fit in big trucks. That's like two, three times the size of the normal battery.
