Some people love draconian sentencing, but I always assume I might one day get arrested.
Everyone is already a criminal, you know.

I agree with you. For most crimes penalties should be low but for others like rape and murder they should be severe imo
Ross is in jail because of murder charges.
Didn’t they not charge him on that because no one ever actually got killed? Iirc it was “conspiracy to commit murder” or something.
They stopped prosecuting it after he got a forever sentence for other stuff. Waste of taxpayer money.
But that's why he won't get let out early.
More interesting to me is the way American courts pack sentences on top of each other and 400 years comes out, or something ridiculous.
Life sentence in Germany = 25 years.
And you can get out in 15 and the average sentence is 20 years.
Over 25 years is only like unrepentent mass murderers who can't be trusted on parole or house detention.
Even if Germany had convicted Ross of the same thing and given him the maximum penalty, he'd probably be out in 15 years.
Yeah it’s fucked up, the American justice system is pretty broken from what I’ve seen. Can’t speak too much as a Canadian but our country isn’t all that different honestly.
Germany seems pretty based, would love to visit someday. I’ve heard parties in Berlin are absolutely bonkers.
Also #FreeRoss
I'm wary. 😏
Julian Assange is different. I watched that go down in real time and it's a circus.
Kingpin charges.
I agree about them needing high penalties, but the most important deterrent is actually likelihood of being caught and charged.
We shouldn't discount false accusations, tho. They're surprisingly common.
First of all, we need to do away with the concept of "crime" when there is no victim. Then we can discuss what happens with actual criminals, starting with the fact that the threat of extremely severe punishment, like teh death penalty, doesn't seem to be a deterrent for the most egregious cases like murder and rape.
Severity of punishment has more to do with retribution than deterrence.
More effective is assurance of prosecution. Which tends to be high for murder.
Rape prosecutions are usually he said versus she said, and a lot of psychology and culture, so I wouldn't include them in any sentencing debate.
I used to support the death penalty for murderers and potentially even for a rapist, especially a child rapist, but I have since seen how often innocent people are charged and exculpatory evidence is hidden. I would rather a 1,000 guilty people not get the punishment they deserve if it means 1 innocent person is not punished for a crime they didn't commit. Jail time can be somewhat reversed and a person made near whole. Death cannot be reversed when evidence of innocence is proven.
Good point
Same. Seen too much of that.
And how many people get sentenced to death for political or religious reasons? Often for crimes that don't even have a victim, like being gay or "thought crimes"?
I support it only for public safety, when imprisonment isn't feasible, and that currently isn't a problem, except in places that are total war zones or failed states.
And those places tend to be under martial law, anyway, which is a different set of rules.
And, obviously, if someone where raping me and you dragged him off and beat him to death, I probably wouldn't mourn him for too long. Light a candle and say ten Hail Marys. LOL
But the hurdle for the state should be higher.
i think the retribution is worthless
we want to make it so that every piece of shit who has a sick desire to do such things, is so scared of being caught that they actually don't act it out
i say, we give them solitary, and involuntary life extension treatments so they live that way for as long as possible
I'm assuming it'd merely be wrath, not calculation.
The state doesn't get to excuse themselves by way of temporary insanity, but having some guy go completely apeshit on you is the risk you take when committing the crime, so that's on the criminal.
also, my second girlfriend was raped by this piece of shit
i knew who it was and he never got any serious trouble out of it
but one day i walked past a car and found the key to the car... and i deliberately found friend of piece of shit rapist, and said "this is a key to a car on this street, maybe your mate wants this" and he went and stole it and got way more trouble than for the rape charges
so, yeah... i know what i'm talking about and calculating, cold, and mentally painful ways of punishment are way better than any death sentence
it is said to be cruel and unusual punishment to put people in solitary for more than a year... i met a dude who did a year in there and he was given a pension for the damage after he got out
he was just selling heroin (and he was a junkie).
i say, if the act was cruel and unusual, then the punishment should be cruel and unusual
death is kindness to pedos, murderers, liars and manipulators... they should get solitary, for life, that is WAY worse than killing them
and anyone who promotes calling things crime when there is no victim also needs that solitary for life
we need to start establishing some reasonable standards for what constitutes jurisprudence
