Of you're looking for a good laptop to tinker with, have a look at this:
These are the last great Thinkpads, IMO. Not as modular as previous generations but new enough to have better screens, WiFi, USB-C, and still fantastic keyboards. You can add in an extra drive, way more RAM, and even a much better screen (though the normal non-touch screen is decent enough for my purposes), and still has two batteries with one being easily swapable.
Want a sleeker package with less modularity? The 490/590 are a better deal, usually.
