I wonder what the United States of America would have been called had the North lost the civil war. 🤔

They kept the "united" part even during the civil war. I guess it was part of the campaign to discredit the new country that split off.

Same reason they referred to the South as "rebels". They wanted to make it clear they were not acknowledging the soverenty of the Confererate States of America.
