He liked grass, a few bushes symmetrically in front of the house. I prefer layered gardens with different areas for entertaining, children, dogs. Lights strung across a patio, a fire pit to gather around, an area for a hammock to cuddle on a chilly night or read in on pretty days.

It wasn’t until I was talking about it with a friend later that I thought the first type of garden says stay off my lawn. While the type of garden I like involves effort, cultivation, and is meant to be a gathering spot.
