The Enlightenment axiom "Sapere aude", popularized by enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant, taken from the Latin poet Horace, means "Dare to Know". Or more accurately, "dare to have the courage to find the truth through reason".

This phrase summarizes the root ethos which grew out of the enlightenment period. Another modern phrasing would be, do your own research. Do not trust priests, kings, lords, politicians, or self appointed experts to determine the truths which you must believe. And if they try to force you, resist.
