it's like i said, the babies are picked up to go to egg duty a bit later than the first males are maturing and there's a bit of viable going on

i'm almost certain this is the whole story, auto-fertilisation is way too unlikely to be sufficient to explain the number of times i've seen little red dots in my egg yolks
