Where are the user names coming from on Damus? Are you using petname first, then if that’s not around getting name from set_metadata ?
i do not use petnames but I want to add that

you basically send a note (with event kind 0) to the world that says “this is my name”. others can have the same name though, so it’s still your public key that identifies you
