Well I'd bet that the 'father' is in the kid's life, if only tangentially and this is prolly how he is.

This. When my five years old gets mad he acts just like me when I'm mad at him. Same seething through his teeth.
You have to be really careful and make sure you teach them good anger coping mechanisms.
Mine are not great and unfortunately those get quickly carried to the next generation.
