Daily Roman History:

During the very early Imperial period Augustus envisioned the border extending well into Germania. This goal was halted after the battle of Teutoburg forest, the largest Roman loss to date wherein three whole legions, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus, were salughtered almost completely. Facilitated by a Germanic officer, named Arminius who was attached to Varus' auxilia, the Roman army was lead into a trap and ambushed by an alliance of Germanic tribes. So devastating was the loss to his future ambitions Emperor Augustus could sometimes be heard banging the walls of the imperial palace yelling "Varus, give me back my legions!"
