My wife is in wildlife rehab, she knows a lot of nearby animal control officers. The town I partially grew up in, a suburb, had an injured pigeon, the animal control officer there said she has never seen a higher influx of dogs given up, with excuses ranging from bit the other dog to mainly "can't afford to keep feeding it.

This town is somewhat up it's ass in terms of putting on airs with the appearances and such stuff. But "middle class", I dun well enough types.
