Maybe clients should stop mentioning people if these people have not participated in the thread in the last 5 messages, for example.

Is it not better to make this a thing that the user can configure in the client on their end? Like “don’t notify me of responses x hops away”.

Yes.. maybe don’t mention other users by reply and let clients decide how to handle them instead

It’s probably easier on the relay to actually mention everybody, but the client decides if it *shows* that you were mentioned.
