Scientists Made an Ultra-Thin Material That Stops Bullets by Hardening Like a Diamond

Researchers from The City University of New York (CUNY) have discovered a groundbreaking new material called diamene, which has the potential to revolutionize bullet-proof armor.

Diamene is created by stacking two layers of graphene, a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern. While graphene is already known as the world’s strongest material, this new configuration gives it a remarkable property: under sudden mechanical pressure, diamene temporarily hardens to a diamond-like consistency.

Unlike traditional bullet-proof armor, which is often heavy, diamene-based materials could offer the same level of protection without the added weight.
