So the resistor and transistor stabilize input into the relay? I just read about this, I don't understand the risk of not having the flyback. The residual voltage would only be fractions of a volt right? No capacitors or anything to hold a charge so what is the danger?

So you're just trying to make an "On air" sign for your node essentially?
