I was quite willing to hear what he had to say, and to be open to compelling arguments, but it was the grossest arogance on his part to demand that I abandon my position in favour of his based on nothing more than: "I find your position unsettling"

I wonder if he does that to everyone he disagrees with. Or if he was just ornery.
The concept of the established, canonical enemy during a war is hard to overcome. And he might have been evangelizing in some way to keep you from committing heresy.
