Didn’t they do it again when they chased BTC miners out of the country. They could have plugged every available miner on the planet into the 3Rivers dam and taken the lead, but the communists would have to give up control over their people.

It was a poor strategic move for sure but mining is still quite sizable in China.

Neither bitcoin nor bitcoin mining is actually “banned” in China. The Mandarins simply called it out as a “less than favored industry” and so the enforcement bureaucrats were given a window of time to freely and forcefully go after whoever wasn’t sufficiently politically connected.

The modern iteration of CCP functionaries equally struggle to ever fully close a door that they themselves use or intend to use.
