For a good reason.

In English, "W" is "double u" (uu).

In French, its "double v" (vv).

I think about this often and wonder how they πŸ†'d this one up so bad.

The English is more true to the sound. The French is more true to the letter shape.

....well that actually makes it make sense 🫠
