What's the logic here, try and secure another term before the wheels fall off completely?

I don't think that would be the smart move. I think it's more a, "we failed, we can't go on like this" move. The French tend to show clearly when they are not happy, compared to many other countries.
Makes sense just surprising as he's got 2 years left, right before the Olympics too.
