The physical explanation given is nonsense. They keep speaking of the round earth as if gravity was pushing down to a flat surface where the earth is positioned. Flying around a planet is a dinamic situation where the frame of reference of direction changes and is just locally identified as flat flying because a flat surface approximate quite well a round object just around the point of contact of the tangent.
