Going down the privacy rabbit hole after listening to npub10uthwp4ddc9w5adfuv69m8la4enkwma07fymuetmt93htcww6wgs55xdlq and learning more about privacy. I think I want more privacy in my digital life.

Now the question is where does one start? I'm an entrepreneur so having a public presence is important for business.

I already use a VPN for browsing. Next should I get one of those encrypted emails? Currently use Gmail for most everything. I know I need to get away from them.

I do use presearch for searching as well as have started using the Brave browser.

TIA for any info you might have.

Worth getting a proton account, yes. I have Proton Unlimited which include drive space, some email perks, password manager, etc. Theyre a solid company.

Imo, focus on asking yourself “privacy from whom and for what.”

There are *some* things I don’t mind sharing with a select group of companies, and others I don’t want anyone to know. Very often the techniques and how you manage your workflow will appear from that thought.

Well exactly, do I use my name, but use encryption or do I use a made up name? I'm a fucking wreck just coming up with a new email address...

Depends brother. I use my name on one, and don’t on another. As far as handles go, picking something with meaning to you takes time. “TheSameCat” has meaning to me and took months to think of.

Proton will allow you to have several addresses. Think they call them “aliases”

For business purposes, for bills, etc I just use my name. This also minimizes cross talk between my alias and my state name. Shoot, I use my gmail for all that. It’s not truly “private” info anyways since they all sell it to one another anyways.

I use my proton for things I don’t want tied to me, like social accounts, gaming accounts, etc. The encryption is just a bonus.

You can also use pgp with your gmail using FlowCrypt if you would like the content of certain messages to be protected from being read by Google, but are ok with the recipient knowing who are you, etc.

That way you can compartmentalize what any company or person knows about you. Gmail for “don’t care,” gmail+flowcrypt for “they know me but it’s private” and proton for “I want my identity to be private.”

I’m not being comprehensive here, but these are ideas to start.

I like Presearch and and Proton.
