would you put a chicken coop near a small fruit orchard (3 peach trees, three apple trees, 2 fig trees)

yeah. and let them free range in the orchard from time to timez

No downsides you can see? I was thinking it would fertilize and give them air cover from hawks

well we are freerange maxis, so im not sure were the best ones to ask. we accept were going to lose some from time to time. we have one that sleeps in a tree.

but they are happier and the eggs are better.

That's fair, our last batch is at my parents house as we get this situation under control. They liked hiding in blueberry bushes so I'm trying to give them cover near the coop

yeah. we have the opposite problem. if i stopped hacking back the blackberry and salmonberry bushes for one year, i think the whole property would disappear 🫠

we had to start over at the new house, there wasn't anything useful but a bigger lot. Going to be a while but at least I left my dad a good base at the old place 😁

I don’t have chickens, yet, but I don’t see why not. Chooks will kill pests and fertilise the trees

They'll turn any fruit that drops into eggs.

Yes. Then swap the chickens out for ducks.

Established vs new orchard matters. It its new. You'll need to protect the trees and I'd say probably much or cage the base in case of too much scratching. Or just pay attention and be ready to mulch if they do that to a tree

Fair enough, I can mulch and protect them for a couple years

Yeah, otherwise they might try to get in them and break branches
