When Britain and France forced Czechoslovakia in 1938 to cede the Sudetenland to Nazi Germany, they believed this would ensure long-term peace. In reality, however, this policy of appeasement toward a revisionist aggressor had the opposite effect, paving the way for another world war just one year later.
