They are the same thing, also referred to in common tongue as statism.

During the first nine decades of last century, no fewer than 20 governments reached the dubious milestone of 1,000,000 murdered civilians.

One of those governments was Nazi, and six of them were Communist. The others...?

Good question. And freedom has never been honestly tried. Go figure.

Ayn Rand explained it well.

The root cause is the basic error in philosophy most people have.

They mistakenly think that altruism is a virtue and so communism is an ideal, if only they could make it work.

In other words, despite the track record of 100 million deaths, many people think communism is an ideal and if only human nature was different, or, if only we tried harder this time...

In the age of social media, no “altruistic” act should go unrecognized 😏😉

There's nothing wrong with altruism as long as you retain the principles of methodological individualism and private property. The problem is 'altruism by proxy' -- "I will help my neighbor" vs. "YOU WILL help my neighbor too whether you want to or not."

A better word for the bad kind of altruism for which Auguste Comte coined the term might be “abnegationism”.
