wild that they tried to make "dad bod" a thing

"no seriously, women prefer that doughy, undisciplined, muscle-free look!"

i do. just a personal preference

lol, just absurd. Reminds me of the unattractive “swimsuit models” they put on the actual cover of an actual magazine

I'm still looking for the headquarters of the illustrious cabal known only as "They". Will report back if They don't get me first.

The truth is somewhere in between IMO.

Exercise is good but the actual utility of having a perfectly toned bod isn’t what it used to be. Most of us aren’t pushing boulders up a hill and working plows to provide for our families anymore.

Unless you’re a manual laborer or athlete, there comes a point when muscles are mostly for show and attracting mates. This is why gym bros are often masking some deeply rooted insecurity.

Women like a man who is comfortable in his own skin, regardless of body type. And when kids are in the picture, they sometimes prefer the father to spend free time with them rather than training all night at the gym.

Balance in all things.

ok but you still confirmed the "attracting mates" part

everyone has personal preferences, so all sorts of body types are liked by all types of people, etc.

but all things being equal, to suggest that women prefer the slightly flabby/out of shape/doesn't-even-try-look over, say, a generally fit and toned look is quite the claim

it's probably more accurate to say something like: "most women don't value physical fitness quite as highly as many men think they do, and instead tend to prioritize other attributes that suggest long-term loyalty and willingness to provide for a family"

doesn't have the same clickbait ad revenue ring to it though

Yeah a lot of it is people making virtues out of necessity to placate themselves.

agreed

Fitness isn't necessarily muscle definition and tone. Fitness implies optimization to your environment. If your environment is a sofa, maybe your optimal body type is potato.

But seriously, look at those who live in polar regions; they tend to carry more fat, which they need for insulation and energy stores. Look at those who do hard manual labor, most also carry more fat for energy storage. Thin people tend to come from warm climates.
