Yes, I was thinking of having the trending algos be configurable subscriptions.

- I'd give them the benefit of an MVP.
You can iterate on algorithms pretty quickly and easily. The tricky part is to define what you want (and don't want) to achieve, and how to measure whether your changes are achieving exactly that.
I would expect progression like this:
1.0:
- More complex algorithm, driving more diverse engagement
- You can try to optimize for more nuanced engagement factors, and their combinations. (length of the comments; authors re-engagement in the threads; ...)
- Potentially you can pair it up with some Sectional breakdown of the "Trending" ("Pictures"; "Discussion-stirring topics"; "Memes of the day"; "GM notes"; "Most Zapped"; "Farmstr community")
2.0:
- You seperate the client from the trending algorithm control
- Enable each user to configure what sections (tabs) with what algorithms they want to see there (nudge in some defaults, but allow user-controlled overwrites)
- The "MySpace experience"
