Is mesh just a stand-in for the superiority of Nostr? I understand it is a way to avoid being detected on the internet?

Mesh in this context is like a local network.

Not necessarily connected to the internet.

Mesh is bluetooth mesh, the same bluetooth that you can use to connect your headphones - the mesh means that the devices can connect to each other and pass along messages, forming a network. The goal is for you to be able to communicate privately, even without internet.

Bluetooth only reaches 10 meters, and unless youre in a busy place there is no one to pass along your message. When you favorited someone and they are unreachable, but you have internet, bitchat will instead send the message as a nostr message via relays.

Last piece of the puzzle is geohashes, a little code that represents a place in the world. You can join a channel for your location (or teleport to a random one) and everyone is communicating via nostr messages there.
