as for powerlifting gyms being the real fat acceptance gyms i agree.

there are 4 ways to measure fatness:

1 - BMI, which is the worst way and also the one used by doctors because the job of doctors is to keep you sick so pharma and insurance companies make more money

2 - Bodyfat Percentage - this is used by bodybuilders and is still a bad way - because BF% only determines how good or bad you look, not how healthy you are

3 - Total Fat Mass - this would be your bodyweight minus your lean body mass. you may think this is the same as BF% but it is not. because a huge powerlifter may have the same BF% as a skinny fat kid, but actually the skinny fat kid will live to 70 while the powerlifter will die at 45. because although BF% is the same the total fat mass carried by powerlifter is DOUBLE because his total body weight is double.

4 - visceral fat mass. we know from science that it is not subcutaneous but visceral fat that shortens one's life span. women can be very fatty and still healthy as long as the fat is in their ass and tits. it is only the fat inside your abdomen that kills you. also young guys can look very soft but as long as they don't have a beer / power belly they are still healthy. by contrast older guys may look ripped but as long as they have a belly they have one foot in the grave.

while not accurate a practical way to judge visceral fat is simply the waist size / how prominent the belly is. on other hand an MRI scan can measure visceral fat mass accurately, but you need money for this ( you need to pay cash ) and not many clinics offer this service.

but by just simply understanding the difference between the 4 metrics you will already be ahead of 99.9% of the population, even if you can't afford the MRI.

bodybuilders and powerlifters mistakenly believe that muscle protests them from the artery clogging effects of visceral fat. IT DOES NOT.

correlation doesn't imply causation. yes strong people are less likely to die but this isn't because taking steroids makes you live longer ( it doesn't ). it's because sickness makes you lose strength. unfortunately this is too nuanced for the average dumb fuck gym bro and when i confronted some training gurus with this information they also refused to acknowledge it because they sell the suckers on the lie that deadlifts will make them live longer and they aren't interested in the truth - only in money.

but any idiot can observe for himself that the strongest people on the planet do not live very long. but they refuse to look at reality because it is depressing and useless since they aren't going to give up drugs and they won't agree to eat less since they know that being hungry sucks and they don't want to get weaker. they would much rather continue killing themselves while also making money by killing their clients too while lying to them about how they are extending their life span because they are getting stronger and strength is correlated with longevity.

Is there a clear understanding of what causes buildup of visceral fat? I believe both age and genetics would have to be factors, and those can't be fought, but there has to be some amount of control over this. I do occasionally see older men who are still lean and have little visceral fat, although it's rare these days.

yeah bro it's called calories

LOL

calorie restriction is the surest way to extend life span

not everybody agrees that it's worth the effort though

but it's definitely worth the effort if you have a belly

But I'm saying as compared with the buildup of subcutaneous fat. Obviously caloric intake is the cause but what is the decisive factor in the difference? Age?

age and hormones.

testosterone seems to be involved because it is mostly an issue for men, not so much women. maybe also why women live longer.

but there may be other hormones involved - perhaps cortisol ? ( it's a stress hormone known to make people get out of shape )

also since it's called "beer belly" perhaps alcohol has an effect too - perhaps directly - perhaps indirectly by damaging the liver.

i haven't looked into it. i am sure if you google it the information has to be out there. they wouldn't try to hide this because they know this is way deeper than the average person would ever look.

they only hide the stuff that is obvious because they know people's attention span.

i haven't looked because it probably wouldn't change anything - alcohol, cortisol and calories would still be bad for you - and i still wouldn't give up testosterone even if it killed me.

but if you're curious you should absolutely research it and let us know what you find.
