The serpent in Genesis 3 was in the story to represent the fact that Adam and Eve had just achieved the spiritual accomplishment of self-awareness.

Matthew 10:16 is about achieving another spiritual accomplishment…multiple really: unconditional love, clear communication, and “giving it to God” if you will.
