Kinda like settings on fb for posts to only be visible to friends, or only one specific person, or friends and friends of friends, or everyone except a specific person(s).

Exactly like this. Would also be an amazing benefit to not have your social media profiles crawled and stored indefinitely to be used against you. The downside to it on twitter and Facebook is they always keep a copy even if it's private to the rest of us.

the ideal situation is you and your mates keep each other's notes, though they are all encrypted, the ones not meant for everyone... they are not so likely to leak it and not so likely to run a rat relay
