This is an interesting point. I see one exception: if this is said in the context of wanting to retain the freedoms that were granted. Because, if I would do loads of work for someone, and this other person would then violate the rights you have regardless, then at least you can claim that they actively acted against you instead of 'not reciprocating in the way you wanted it'.
