Npub = username
Nsec = password
But you can't change them.
Why do people think this is complicated

Old dogs. 🤷🏻♂️
New words they’ve never heard about 🤷♀️
I think because these are called Npub and Nsec in the first place. If it had been username and password to begin with, there would likely be less confusion.
However, you point out the critical difference: it can't be changed and restored. As with Bitcoin, one must re-learn to take responsibility.
You know how they put the same gum in five different places at Walmart?
That’s the level of idiot proof your end users need
Btw this is me fwiw
Because this is the first time I see it expressed so succinctly.
“But you can’t change them” that’s a pity. With Bitcoin I can transfer my account balance to a new address (provided I still have the key). Would be cool to be able to do the same on Nostr. Old notes (from previous account) would still show as the protocol could map them to the new key and “burn” the previous one.
A long way of saying “account transfer” in Nostr would be cool if one is afraid that the nsec has been compromised.
I can see an account migration thing being important. Wonder if cryptographically it's possible to implement in a NIP or service.
This is how all services/apps I sign up for should be. No more email, phone number requirement bs.
This is an unsolved terminology problem across clients. Some friction new nostr users experience is using e.g. their twitter knowledge to what nostr is.
Npub is not a username, as e.g.twitter users are used to. On twitter you can change your username. You cannot change your npub, save for creating a new one, and abandoning your prior npub.
Currently on damus, npub is separate from username. There is also display name.
A new user recently commented about this confusing experience. One thought I passed back to the new user was what if we indicated what is a unique / immutable field, and what is not.
For instance,
Ooo scary
Different = Hard for some people
Be patient sir. We need these folks to onboard to #grownostr
