Enjoy 😊

Not sure I'll start it for a little bit, still got some other reading I wanna complete. It's a math blog about infinite subway cars...and well, it's really quite cool. May transcribe a bit of it here (the easier yet still surprising results) at some point soon

That sounds different!

I look forward to reading the results.

That would be interesting to you?

Here's a taste - imagine a train car with infinitely many seats (1,2,3...) and stops at station 1, 2, 3, ... , omega (the first infinite ordinal - the number just above these) which is the last stop. At station 0, 1 person on, at station 1 1 gets off and 1 gets off, at station 2 1 off and 2 on, etc. How many passengers are on at omega station?

ZERO!

I did not think my Friday night could get any more exciting! But it did! And I owe it all to you nostr:npub162zpxufpw8pnuytaf0gfxzkqtvk9rvcwkvppa7x57y3n7qkfpg4shatdhy

I’ve just spent much of it down a rabbit hole of what the hell are you on about and where do I even start.

Which finally lead me to this entertaining enigma. And wow! He was right. Mind blown. 🀯

https://joshkerr.com/mind-blown-the-fast-growing-hierarchy-for-laymen-aka-enormous-numbers/

My brain hurts now.

Coming back to your question: Would it be interesting to me? Apparently yes, given I’ve just spent the last hour and a bit looking at ordinal visualisations and reading about weird maths.

Oh and if you really want to hook me in, show me pretty visualisations. They help me connect to the numbers. And if I don’t understand the numbers, I can at least look at pretty pictures.

As for your train question - does the answer have to do with the ordinal number itself?

At w = +w-w=0

Please feel free to laugh if I’ve completely misunderstood. In no universe would anyone call me good at maths.

I’m now sucked in and I genuinely would like to understand the answer.

Also don’t judge me for saying maths. It’s an Aussie thing.

Lemme get back to you properly later today when I've got time. Morning things happening!

I could ramble on for a long time on this. Back later πŸ‘€

nostr:npub1dtf79g6grzc48jqlfrzc7389rx08kn7gm03hsy9qqrww8jgtwaqq64hgu0 was this the same article you once linked me, or is it just a very similar one? Looks a tad different than I remember it

no, but it’s a good one!

If you want to get a sense of how insane even the E0 level is, the Goodstein meta function discussed here is on that level of the hierarchy. Grows VERY fast, just not as fast as TREE(3).

Ah yes, I think I watched this when you recommended it. And I may also have browsed the above article (or something very similar), just wanted to be sure.

Btw, I may tag you in later post regarding infinite subway, if I take time to write up some highlights later. It's just paraphrasing someone else, but it's such a cool concept, and very in line with your fascination on growing numbers. Hope you don't mind

Please do! I love that kind of shit

With at least 2 people likely to read it, I'd be a fool not to post it. Gonna be a few hours before I get to it. Brace your brains, it's wild yet comprehensible without much background

I have no idea where you live, but if you live anywhere near the sea, listen to the story while looking at the ocean and smelling the salt in the air 🌊 πŸ’™

Go all in on the sensory experience!

I spose I could open the windows...

Jk, don't live by ocean. Save book for next time I'm there...nah. Guess I'll miss out slightly

You could try the bath! Add a bit of sea salt. Sorted! 😊

You are wise, B

Or very silly!
