Team of two plus minor, for say 9 years, is a much weaker team unfortunately.
Lower your time preference. Children are the ultimate team members because you raise them from birth, their love for you is based upon blood, and they keep the team going when you're old. Also, they keep the team together, while they're young.
The idea that children are just a burden, is why civilization is collapsing. Children are an investment.
