AKITO’S CALL

——

*** 1 ***

Jay Murphy leaves Sarah's room. She just fell asleep. Jay wants to fully enjoy his evening. He is eager to reconnect on the "bitcointalk.org" forum. As usual on Friday nights, his wife Emily left for her theater class at 8:30 PM. Jay savors this long geek evening that awaits him. Arriving in his office, he automatically turns on his two computers... Although he hates working on weekends, he can't help but read an urgent email sent by his boss:

From: josh.puckett@bitcoin.org

To: jay.murphy@bitcoin.org

Jay,

The board of directors wants you to determine the computational power needed to crack the cryptography at the base of bitcoin. If possible, estimate the time remaining before the release of a computer capable of cracking this algorithm.

Best regards,

Josh

Immediately, his trapezoids tense... as he massages his sore shoulders, Jay thinks about Sarah sleeping peacefully in her little girl's room... This image calms him a bit. "Damn it, Jay! Don't mess around! Don't forget your true values! What's really important for you is Sarah, Emily, you, and your health... Don't let your work eat you up, or it'll kill you!"

Jay opens "bitcointalk.org," his favorite forum, rubbing his hands. A new message has arrived in "Important Announcements." It's really not common! He quickly checks it out. That very day at 20:42:42, someone supposedly named "Satoshi Nakamoto" posted a message titled "Akito's Call." Strangely, the message only contains a link to bitcoin.org/akito_s_call.pdf. His neurons instantly send an abnormally large amount of nerve signals. Jay is literally overwhelmed. He holds his head and shouts:

"What the hell is this mess!"

Jay knows it's highly unlikely for a VIP pretending to be Satoshi Nakamoto to be allowed to post an "Important Announcement" on bitcointalk.org. It's just as incredible that Satoshi Nakamoto would return to upload a file on bitcoin.org! "This must be an identity thief, a 'faketoshi' as they say! But he's really good at cybersecurity. How did he do this? And more importantly, why?

Emily won't be back from her theater class until midnight anyway. The class will extend at least until one, and then they'll need at least two hours at the Balans Soho Society Café, as usual, before heading back down into the city. He has six hours left to solve this mystery before resuming his weekend calmly...

But first, method! Otherwise, serendipity and distraction will ruin his productivity. He closes the screens of his computers, puts his phone on silent mode. As he always does when faced with a delicate new problem, Jay stands up, takes a few steps, and goes to his bookshelf in search of a new notebook. "The problem is serious; the one with the red-dyed leather cover will be most suitable." And he finally cracks a smile. Black marker in hand, he immediately goes into task-listing mode. Three deep belly breaths later, his heart has somewhat returned to a normal rhythm.

"No point in continuing the shopping list. Might as well start now." Mechanically, he unlocks his phone. A notification flashes on his home screen for half a second before disappearing once his fingerprint is read:

" Coinbase 📉 BTC (BTC) is down -24.62% in the last 24 hours".

"Oh my god!" Jay feels like he's been punched in the stomach. He leans against the wall, pale. He already knows what he'll find in his crypto portfolio, but he needs to confirm: his investments show a total loss of £3,144.07.

He's devastated, "rekt" as they say in these situations! Fortunately, Emily doesn't snoop in his portfolios, and he's always been reasonable, never investing more than he can afford to lose...

Even though losing over £3,100, after five years of refining his personal investments, convinced he'd one day go to the moon with bitcoin, it certainly doesn't feel good!
