A harpoon... That's certainly a choice.
This is halibut fishing country, so everybody's got one on their boat to help with landing big ones. They would do some damage in a melee, but bringing one to gun fight is pretty stupid.

Yeah, that's not a good choice. I kinda sucks that this happened, and we don't know why.
