Sometimes I make it work somehow, but the truth is that I never managed to learn how to properly deal with these binary tarballs that come with a bunch of /usr, /share, /lib, /include directories inside. I can only imagine there is a canonical way of unpackaging them into the correct places.

Just put it in /usr/local ...

Are you using tar -C
