Are the fingers important in the what's up part?

Absolutely, they are. ASL's building blocks are the 5 Parameters (Handshape, Palm Orientation, Movement, Location, and Facial Expressions/"non-manual markers"); If any 1 of the 5 are incorrect, the sign falls apart and no longer makes sense.
If, for instance, for the second sign, I kept everything else the same but changed the MOVEMENT to opposite-moving 'circles' (kinda), "WHAT'S-UP" would become "EXCITED".
