In politics, the government, if sufficiently short term motivated, can be tempted to fork the system at the detriment of productive citizens. Sovereign individuals owning firearms is an immune function that helps prevent that.

Does it need to be firearms? Switzerland has good democratic tools that serve as an immune function for that, maybe that could be another way.

They do. But from inside experience I can tell you that they consider the democratic tools the ones the care about, much more than the guns.
