Forgiving the debt would vaporize everyone's pension funds for one because they're heavily invested in treasures which are the debt instruments we're talking about cancelling here. Nearly everyone is exposed to this debt in some way.
But it doesn't matter anyway because it's piling up so fast lately that soon it's going to become apparent that the government can no longer make good on this obligation and all the debt becomes worthless paper pretty quickly.
