Without religion, tribes were small and brutal. With religion, tribes can be arbitrarily large. I can travel far and know I will find brotherhood and safety and trust with strangers. Religion is meta, it transcends empires. With scale, comes conflict at scale. If you want religion to end, you must solve the scaling issue of trust.

Same thing can be said about language.

Or other cultural or biological traits different populations share.

Religion is just another tool for doing that, not the only one.

Sure. The scaling function however is unique. What beats it? Furthermore, the religion itself is not the issue. Power projection capabilities are. Religion is a cover for people who wish to do harm. The books are all rather interesting and do hold great truths.
